Monterey High School vs Carmel High School Varsity CCS Baseball Playoff – May 24, 2014

In high school baseball, the central coast
section playoffs entered the quarter finals today. Ten local area teams were still in
it at the beginning of the day, now only two remain. Two of those ten teams faced of at
Monterey Peninsula College this morning. One will be moving on to the Semi-Finals, the
other one going home for the off-season. This was a true battle. A Division II play off
game between the Carmel Padres and the Monterey High Toreadores. Carmel took an early 2-nothing
lead in the first and no one scored until the bottom of the last inning. Last chance
for Monterey. Down 2 to nothing. Runner’s on first to second, Logan Hunter puts down
the bunt. The Carmel pitcher overthrows first and Benny Jones comes in to make it a one
run game. The next batter from Monterey would be Dillon Landon and he’s going to hit a fly
ball to left. Justin Villarreal on third base from Monterey is going to tag up, but a great
throw by the Carmel left fielder Jack Zubick and a great tag by the catcher Robby Treadwell
and Villarreal is out at the plate and it’s still 2-1 Carmel. The Carter Aldrete from Monterey hits a deep
grounder through a hole. Carmel shortstop Kenny Navo(?) makes a great play, but his
throw is too late. Hunter scores to tie the game and we would go into extra innings. In
the bottom of the 9th, score tied 2 to 2, runner on second and big Joey Pryor coming
up to the plate and he’s going to get the clutch hit right here, a booming double to
the field wall. Romey Miramontes is coming around to score. Miramontes also gets the
win for pitching seven scoreless innings in the league for the Toreadores and Monterey
completes the “come from behind” victory in extra innings. 3 to 2 is the final. Toreadores
will face the only other team to win today, St. Francis Central Coast Catholic next in
the semi-finals and a great season for Carmel comes to an end.
